PREFACE

This publication contains Lessons Learned from a major deployment made by the 256th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized), Louisiana Army National Guard. The 256th, a roundout unit of the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized), participated in training rotation 87-12 at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California. The brigade deployed with its organic DS artillery battalion, support battalion, and tank battalion, along with one 5ID mechanized battalion and other normal CS and CSS attachments from the division. The lessons learned are designed to assist other Reserve Component (RC) units preparing for similar missions. The focus is on training management, deployment, and logistics lessons derived from the brigade's rotation to the NTC.

Most of the information in this bulletin is applicable to other deployments. Additionally, CALL intends to follow this publication with another bulletin addressing worldwide RC deployments such as REFORGER, BLAZING TRAILS, and TEAM SPIRIT.
