PUBLICATIONS

The Army's primary family readiness guidance is contained in DA Pamphlet 608-47, A Guide to Establishing Family Readiness Groups, August 1993. This 25-page document advises commanders and family readiness leaders on the responsibilities and objectives of family support organizations. It outlines limitations on family support volunteers and provides some examples of telephone techniques. The pamphlet is not intended, however, to be a "how-to" guide, and many of the specifics of Family Readiness Groups are not covered by DA guidance.

Unit commanders and their staffs have filled this gap by locally publishing techniques and procedures in regulations and family readiness materials. Commanders of Task Force Eagle units and Operation INTRINSIC ACTION units have produced excellent resources for use by unit-level Family Readiness Group leaders. Fort Hood Pamphlet 608-3, Family Support Guide to Deployment, April 1998, includes very detailed information on handling a variety of deployment and predeployment problems, as well as guidance on family concerns and financial management. In addition, families of Task Force Eagle units were issued a "Quick Reference Guide" that summarized "immediate actions" for a whole host of common family problems. At Fort Stewart, the division produced a local regulation (Fort Stewart Pamphlet 608-1, Family Readiness Group System, March 1994) that provides clear and detailed guidance on family readiness policies and techniques, and includes worksheets, templates, and other FRG aids.

The below publications, as well as other locally produced checklists, SOPs, and pamphlets, provide ways for unit-level Family Readiness Groups to enhance FRG activities for the benefit of members of the Army Family.
