Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri says Israeli troops continue to occupy parts of southern Lebanon.
Berri made the remarks at a press conference in Beirut on Tuesday. He said Israeli troops' presence violates the ceasefire agreement with the resistance movement Hezbollah and hinders the full deployment of Lebanese forces along the border.
He explained that Israeli forces are stationed in five strategic locations within the Lebanese territory.
Virtually 9,000 Lebanese soldiers, Berri said, have already been deployed to the south of the Litani River.
However, he said, "the continued Israeli occupation of vast parts of southern Lebanese territory" is obstructing the full deployment of the Lebanese forces up to the international border.
Berri also questioned Israel's adherence to the ceasefire agreement.
"The question that should be asked is when, where, and how has Israel committed to a single clause of the ceasefire agreement?"
Earlier in the day, the official Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that the army mobilized its forces in the border town of Meiss al-Jabal following increased Israeli military activities near the frontier.
The Lebanese army's mobilization and deployment of vehicles and troops in the area came in response to Israeli forces establishing alert positions inside the occupied territories adjacent to Meiss al-Jabal, it said.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun recently instructed the army to confront any Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon, following recent Israeli strikes, including one that resulted in the death of an employee inside the Blida municipality.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Berri dismissed as "mere lies" Israeli allegations that weapons are being smuggled into Lebanon from Syria.
He said US envoy Morgan Ortagus had raised the issue during her recent visit to Beirut. "The United States — which controls the skies with its satellites and other means — knows that these claims are false."
Berri called for the reactivation of the ceasefire monitoring committee, known as the Mechanism, to facilitate regular meetings and potentially involve civilian or military experts, similar to past efforts in delineating the Blue Line and the maritime border.
He reiterated Hezbollah's full commitment to the ceasefire agreement with Israel, despite ongoing deadly violations by the regime since November 2024.
Berri expressed confidence that the Lebanese people would strongly oppose any attempt at normalization with Israel.
Since the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah on November 27, 2024, Israel's repeated bombardments have drawn growing condemnation for fueling instability and targeting civilians despite the regime's claims that they are purely aimed at 'self-defense.'
