The Lebanese army has mobilized its forces in the border town of Meiss al-Jabal in southern Lebanon after Israeli military movements near the frontier.

The Lebanese news agency NNA reported on Sunday that the army's mobilization and deployment of vehicles and troops in the area came in response to Israeli forces establishing alert positions inside the occupied territories adjacent to Meiss al-Jabal.

This deployment comes after Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's Thursday directive for the army to confront any Israeli military incursions into southern Lebanon in an escalation of tensions despite an existing ceasefire agreement.

The president's directive followed new airstrikes and a deadly Israeli ground aggression in the town of Blida that left one civilian dead.

According to a statement from the Lebanese presidency on Thursday, Aoun instructed army chief Rudolphe Haikal to "have the Lebanese army confront any Israeli incursion into the liberated southern territories, in defense of Lebanese land and the safety of citizens."

On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike claimed the lives of four people and wounded three others in southern Lebanon. The casualties were caused after an Israeli drone targeted a vehicle in the village of Kafr Rumman.

Another Israeli drone had carried out an airstrike on the nearby town of Kafr Sir earlier that day.

The strikes came three days after Israeli troops carried out a ground incursion into Lebanon's southern province of Nabatieh, where the Saturday attacks took place.

Israel continues to carry out deadly aggression across southern Lebanon amid the regime's continued back-to-back breaches of a ceasefire agreement it reached with the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah on November 27, 2024.

Israel's repeated bombardments have drawn growing condemnation for fueling instability and targeting civilians despite the regime's claims that they are purely aimed at self-defense.

Israeli war minister threatens 'deeper' escalation

Meanwhile, in a social media post on Sunday, Israeli minister of military affairs Israel Katz accused the Lebanese president of "dragging his feet" and delaying the disarmament of Hezbollah, warning of further escalation against the country.

"Hezbollah is playing with fire and the President of Lebanon is dragging his feet," Katz said. "The Lebanese government's commitment to disarm Hezbollah and remove it from southern Lebanon must be carried out."

"The strictest enforcement will continue and will even deepen - we will not allow a threat to the residents of the north," he added.

During a cabinet session on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said that Tel Aviv "will not allow the Lebanon front to once again be a source of threat to Israel", vowing to "do what is necessary to prevent that."

Israel has intensified its acts of aggression against Lebanon significantly over the past few weeks, targeting reconstruction equipment, which the regime claims is used by Hezbollah to rebuild infrastructure.

Over 300 people have been killed by Israel since the ceasefire agreement was reached.
