MANILA -- The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to Philippine maritime security, turning over PHP1.9 million (USD34,500) worth of equipment to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for its Fleet Maintenance and Repair Group (MRG) Workshop at Sangley Point, Cavite on Aug. 18.

In a statement on Friday, the US government said the assistance, provided through the US Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), would help enhance the PCG's ability to maintain and repair its fleet.

"This activity is another important step in our capability buildup to provide the necessary equipment for our MRG," PCG Fleet Commander, Rear Admiral Rommel Supangan, said, noting that the assistance reflects a strong US-Philippine partnership in promoting maritime security.

US Embassy INL Director Kate Richie echoed this commitment, pledging continuous support for the Philippines.

"INL pledged to continue supporting the MRG as they operationalize their maintenance facility and address vessel sustainment requirements comprehensively across the Coast Guard Fleet. This transfer of essential equipment and backup power supply will enable a broader and more effective equipment repair program," she said.

The 400-square-meter Fleet Sangley Point MRG Workshop, inaugurated in May 2024, with a PHP54 million (USD950,000) funding from the US Department of Defense and technical support from the US Coast Guard, complements the MRG facility in the Manila Port Area.

A joint initiative among INL, the Joint US Military Assistance Group Philippines, and the PCG, the MRG Workshop enhances maintenance and repair capability for small boats and systems aboard larger patrol vessels, which is crucial for the country's maritime law enforcement and defense.

The INL, together with other US government agencies, is planning additional support for PCG vessel maintenance efforts in the coming year, through technical training programs, maintenance and logistic systems planning, and equipment donations for vessel operating stations. (PNA)
