MANILA -- Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. on Monday said the Philippine Navy's first-ever joint patrol with the Indian Navy is about to end without a hitch.

The activity started Sunday and was wrapping up as of posting time.

"So far, maganda ang results (the results are good). We have met our objectives for the exercise," Brawner said in a chance interview.

In a statement on Aug. 1, Brawner said the "first of its kind" joint patrol with the Indian Navy would be held in the West Philippine Sea.

"Wala tayong na-experience na (We did not experience) untoward incidents," he said on Monday.

Several vessels reportedly "shadowed" the joint patrol but it was expected, he added without going into specifics on the origin of the vessels.

In a statement, the AFP said a Philippine Air Force (PAF) C-208 patrol aircraft detected and monitored a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Luyang-class destroyer with bow number 161 approximately 26 nautical miles northwest of PN's guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06) around 1:52 p.m. Sunday.

After about an hour, the PAF aircraft sighted another PLAN warship, a Jiangkai II class frigate with bow number 551, approximately 24 nautical miles northwest of BRP Miguel Malvar.

Aside from BRP Miguel Malvar, other participants in the joint maritime patrol were the guided missile frigate BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) on the Philippine side, and the three Indian Navy ships that made a port call in Manila last week -- guided-missile destroyer INS Delhi (D-61), anti-submarine corvette INS Kiltan (P-30) and naval tanker INS Shakti (A-57).
