MANILA -- The commissioning and inclusion of the brand new guided-missile frigate, the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), to the Philippine Navy's (PN) fleet will enhance the country's capability to protect its maritime territories, a ranking naval official said Wednesday.
"BRP Miguel Malvar is a welcome addition to the Philippine Navy. Her modern capabilities will allow us greater and longer operational reach as we continue to perform our mandate of securing our seas," PN spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, said in a message to the Philippine News Agency.
Trinidad also said the BRP Miguel Malvar is a "good investment in the security and future of our country."
The BRP Miguel Malvar is the most advanced and heavily armed ship in PN service. Its sister ship, the BRP Diego Silang (FFG-07), is expected to arrive by June or July.
The ship weighs 3,200 gross tons, measures 118.4 meters, and has a beam of 14.9 meters.
The BRP Miguel Malvar has a range of 4,500 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 15 knots.
With a maximum speed of 25 knots, the ship is equipped with sensors, surveillance systems, and weapons platforms for multi-combat operations, enabling it to track and engage surface, sub-surface, and air threats.
The BRP Miguel Malvar features an Oto Melara main gun, a 35mm Aselsan close-in weapons system, four .50 caliber heavy machine guns, eight C-Star surface-to-surface missile tubes, two triple Blue Shark torpedo tubes for anti-submarine warfare, and 16 vertical launchers for air defense.
Before the arrival of the BRP Miguel Malvar, the most modern ships in the PN inventory were the two Jose Rizal-class frigates -- the BRP Jose Rizal and the BRP Antonio Luna. (PNA)
