MANILA -- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) have strengthened their joint maritime operational capabilities during a capacity-building exercise in Puerto Princesa, Palawan on Tuesday.
In a statement, the PCG announced its participation in the 6th Philippines-United States Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) along with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command (WESCOM).
"Under the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the PCG maintains diplomatic relations with the U.S. and other allied countries that support its mission to protect lives and properties at sea, as well as uphold a peaceful and law-abiding Philippine maritime domain," it said.
The PCG deployed two ships --BRP Melchora Aquino and BRP Malapascua-- and one airplane --PCG Islander Aircraft 251-- while the AFP WESCOM dispatched PS-16, PG-905, and the AW109 air asset.
The Philippine forces were joined by USCGC Stratton in the vicinity waters of Occidental Mindoro.
"Covering an operational area of 572.90 square nautical miles, the [MCA] simulated real-world scenarios through four primary exercises," it said.
The exercises tested inter-agency maritime coordination, joint life-saving response capabilities, organized and professional maneuvering among combined assets, and a photo exercise.
PCG District Palawan Commander, Commodore Weniel Azcuna, said the exercise highlights the "alliance and shared commitment of the Philippines and the US to uphold maritime security, safety, and rules-based international order."
"We conducted operations with transparency, professionalism, and humanitarian intent. This exercise is about ensuring readiness, saving lives, and supporting our shared maritime responsibilities because the Filipino nation deserves our service rooted in law, discipline, and respect for human life," Azcuna said.
After the event, BRP Melchora Aquino escorted USCGC Stratton to the waters of Burgos, Ilocos Sur, as part of the PCG's role in cooperative maritime presence and operational partnership. (PNA)
