
Participation of Minister of Foreign Affairs Emil Hurezeanu in the Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU Member States

The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emil Hurezeanu, attended today, March 17, 2025, the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU Member States (Foreign Affairs Council/FAC), which took place in Brussels.
Ministers discussed Russia's aggression against Ukraine, developments in the Middle East and EU-US relations.
Regarding Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed the unequivocal support for the establishment of a just and lasting peace, supported by substantial and reliable security guarantees. Furthermore, the Minister emphasized the commitment to provide further European assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, he stressed the importance of holding Russia accountable for its aggression on Ukraine, as well as for the damage caused to it, and insisted on advancing the European accession process of both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. He voiced the support for High Representative Kaja Kallas's initiative to strengthen and accelerate European military support for Ukraine.
In relation to the situation in the Middle East, Minister Emil Hurezeanu emphasized the support for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, including through increased humanitarian assistance, as well as the importance of a high-level political dialogue with the Palestinian Authority. He also commended the initiative of an Arab plan to support the reconstruction of Gaza Strip and the identification of a regional security solution.
During the discussion on EU-US relations, Minister Emil Hurezeanu highlighted the unique nature of the transatlantic partnership and the importance of ensuring its long-term viability. He stressed the importance of continuing the EU's dialogue with the Administration in Washington in a coordinated manner in order to better highlight common interests and preserve the transatlantic relationship. With regard to Ukraine, he emphasised the significance of Ukraine's and the EU's participation in future peace negotiations. Last but not least, the Romanian official expressed the support for increased defense spending.
At the same time, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs participated in the ninth edition of the Ministerial Conference dedicated to Syria. Entitled "Standing with Syria: meeting the needs for a successful transition", whose main objective was to gather international political and financial support for a successful transition process in Syria.
On the margins of the Conference, the head of Romanian diplomacy had a meeting with the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Assad Hassan Al-Shaibani. On this occasion, the Romanian dignitary conveyed Romania's support for a peaceful and inclusive political transition process that would meet the aspirations of all Syrians, regardless of religion or ethnicity, and also ensure the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. He conveyed our country's readiness to contribute with its experience to the reconstruction of a prosperous and stable Syria, with consolidated institutions that can effectively address the multiple needs of the Syrian people. The Romanian minister condemned the recent violence and killings in Syria and stressed the importance of protecting the civilians. He also highlighted the importance of transitional justice for ensuring a stable peace in Syria.
