
The President at EU leaders' meeting: We need to work together to seek peace only through strength

On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda participated in a conference call with EU leaders to discuss French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Washington.
At a meeting hosted by President of the European Council António Costa, the French President outlined the key aspects of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday. The French leader emphasized in Washington that any peace agreement has to guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and strong security guarantees, stating that there could be no demilitarization of Ukraine. He also reiterated Europe's strong and continued support for Ukraine, and stressed that Europe has provided 60% of all military assistance to Ukraine. The French leader also underlined that Europe's security depends on Ukraine's security.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that the meeting between President Trump and President Macron reaffirmed the strong bilateral relations between the United States and France, which also strengthen the transatlantic bond. The Head of State noted that Lithuania appreciates Emmanuel Macron's active engagement and contacts with an key ally, the United States, especially given today's geopolitical situation.
Gitanas Nausėda also underscored the importance of ensuring lasting and sustainable peace. "Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees, with Europe making a significant contribution to them. We need to continue working together to pursue peace through strength," the Lithuanian leader pointed out.
The Lithuanian President also reiterated the urgent need for Europe to significantly strengthen its defense capabilities. This topic will be addressed by EU leaders at a special European Council meeting on 6 March.
