Key Points

  • The rapid increase in the number of displaced persons has resulted in an influx of individuals to emergency shelters across Lebanon. According to OCHA[1], there were 785 collective shelters open as of 28 September, with 551 having already reached full capacity. UNRWA continues to open new shelters to increase capacity across the country.
  • UNRWA activated its Emergency Response in Lebanon on 24 September, immediately opening two shelters. Since then, UNRWA has opened eight additional shelters, bringing the total number of operational UNRWA shelters to ten as of 30 September.
  • The ten shelters operated by UNRWA are distributed in the following areas: one in Beirut (Yabud School), four in the Saida Area (Siblin Training Centre, Nablus School, Rafidya School, Beir Zeit/Beit Jala School), four in the North (Toubas School, and Amqa School, Mount Tabour School, and Battir School, all in Nahr el-Bared Camp), and one in the Beqaa (Jarmaq School, in Zahle District).
  • A total of 2,332[2] internally displaced persons (IDPs) are registered in UNRWA shelters as of 30 September, representing an increase of 64 per cent compared to the 1,424 reported on 27 September. This number is expected to continue rising.

Overall Situation

  • According to the last available OCHA report[1], since October 8, 2023, 1,640 people were killed in the hostilities in Lebanon - 1,030 of them in September 2024 alone. Over 8,408 individuals have been injured as of 28 September. This number is expected to have increased between 29 and 30 September.
  • Following heavy strikes by Israeli forces on the southern suburbs of Beirut on the afternoon of 27 September, on 28 September Hezbollah confirmed the death of its Secretary General, Hassan Nasrallah, along with other high-ranking officials, as result of these strikes.
  • Educational institutions in Lebanon remain closed for learning on 30 September, following the decision of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to suspend classes in public and private schools[2] and to postpone the start of the new academic year.[3]
  • As of September 29, IOM reported[4] 346,209 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country since October 2023, with 35 per cent being children. This marks a significant increase since 26 September: an additional 134,890 IDPs have been displaced, representing a 64 per cent rise.
  • As of 30 September, 637 households, representing a total of 2,332 individuals, are registered in UNRWA emergency shelters across the country, marking an increase of 64 per cent since the previous report of 28 September. Of these registered individuals, 49 per cent are Palestinian, 23 per cent are Syrian, and 28 per cent are Lebanese. Among the Palestinian population, 65 per cent are Palestine Refugees from Lebanon (PRL) and 35 per cent are Palestine Refugees from Syria (PRS).
