June 24, 2024

On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda, together with King Felipe VI of Spain, visited the Lithuanian Air Force Base, where they met with the Spanish contingent participating in the Baltic air policing mission.

The Head of State and the Spanish monarch met with the troops of the Baltic air policing mission, and were briefed on the capabilities and equipment. The President thanked the King for Spain's contribution to the security of the Baltic region, highlighting Spain's participation in the Baltic air policing mission for the eleventh time, its active involvement in NATO's forward presence, and the deployment of NASAMS medium-range air defense systems in Latvia.

The President and the King of Spain were also briefed on the host nation support provided by the Lithuanian Air Force and on the operations of the Baltic air policing mission. During the meeting, members of the Spanish Air Force contingent leading the Baltic air policing mission presented their tasks, activities, equipment, and fighter jets.

As part of the implementation of NATO's decisions and the strengthening of air defense in our region, the Head of State made a proposal to consider contributing to the practical implementation of NATO's rotational air defense model by deploying air defense capabilities in Lithuania.

According to Gitanas Nausėda, the Baltic air policing mission demonstrates NATO solidarity. The commitment of allied countries is currently supported by fighter jets and troops from Spain and Portugal conducting air policing duties.

The NATO air policing mission in the Baltic States was launched at the end of March 2004, following Lithuania's accession to NATO. The mission aims to safeguard the airspace of the Baltic States, thus ensuring the integrity of NATO's European airspace.
