NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- USS Albany (SSN 753), homeported in Norfolk, Va., returned from a six-month deployment to the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea Nov. 20.

The crew demonstrated the great flexibility of fast-attack submarines, conducting a wide range of joint requirements supporting national security, as well as multiple operations contributing directly to mission objectives for both U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

Albany also participated in missions in the Gulf of Guinea and directly supported counter-narco terrorism operations in the Caribbean, resulting in the confiscation of more than 2.8 tons of narcotics.

Commanding Officer Cmdr. Mark Merrick said the deployment was one-of-a-kind.

“This was the first time a submarine has participated in missions in the Gulf Of Guinea. The crew worked tremendously hard and I’m proud of their accomplishments,” said Merrick.

Although Merrick took great pride in the crew's accomplishments while deployed, he also added it was good to be home.

“We couldn’t have pulled in at a better time. We get to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with our families,” said Merrick.

During the deployment, Albany crew members were able to serve as ambassadors for the U.S. Navy during port visits to Rota, Spain and also enjoyed visits to Port Canaveral, Fla.; and Kings Bay, Ga.

With stealth, persistence, agility and firepower, fast-attack submarines like Albany are multimission capable –able to deploy and support special forces operations, disrupt and destroy an adversary’s military and economic operations at sea, provide early strike from close proximity, and ensure undersea superiority.

Albany is 360 feet long, displaces 6,900 tons of water, and can travel in excess of 25 knots.
