  • IRAQ/RAIDS VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- The International Red Cross has decided to temporarily shut down its two main offices in Iraq because of increasing attacks being carried out by anti-coalition forces. The announcement was made just hours after pre-dawn raids were made by coalition forces in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.
  • US troops deployed near Pak border: daily IRNA 08 Nov 2003 -- American troops have been deployed in Asmar in Afghanistan`s Kunar province amid reports that they were planning to close Binshahi border crossing linking Afghanistan with Pakistan, local press said.
  • AFGHANISTAN / TALEBAN VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- The United States has warned Americans in Afghanistan, especially American journalists and foreigners working for U-S media groups, that they may be targeted for kidnap. The warning comes as suspected Taleban insurgents are said to have abducted (Friday) two vehicles from a U-N funded aid group.

  • Enterprise CSG Patrols 5th Fleet Waters Navy Newsstand 08 Nov 2003-- As the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) patrols 5th Fleet in support of the global war on terrorism, a vital part of its mission is Maritime Interception Operations (MIO). While patrolling the waters and performing a wide array of important missions, the Enterprise CSG, along with several coalition assets, are constantly on the lookout for illegal activities, ranging from the smuggling of oil and goods to the transfer of terrorists throughout the world.
  • Pace Reminds Americans U.S. is a 'Nation at War' AFPS 08 Nov 2003 -- The vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the United States is winning the war in Afghanistan and Iraq and that America is making progress in the global war on terrorism.
  • NATO/PA Press release NATO Parliamentary Assembly 08 Nov 2003 -- More than 300 parliamentarians from 19 NATO member states and 20 associate states gathered in Orlando, Florida today (Saturday) to debate the impact of the war in Iraq and its aftermath on transatlantic relations and the new type of terrorist threats.

  • IVORY COAST/REBELS VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- Rebels based in the northern part of Ivory Coast have opened an economic summit aimed at helping civilians in areas under their control.
  • U-N/GUINEA VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- The United Nations children's fund, UNICEF, says Guinea has become a magnet and place of refuge for thousands of largely unaccompanied children fleeing West Africa's civil wars. UNICEF says these refugee children have joined thousands of Guinean children separated from their own families, all fending for themselves in urban centers.
  • PHILIPPINES / AIRPORT ATTACK VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- Philippine officials say the capital is back to normal after government troops shot dead two armed men who tried to take over a control tower at Manila's international airport early Saturday morning.
  • RED CROSS/MOROCCAN PRISONERS VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- The International Committee of the Red Cross, the I-C-R-C, says 300 Moroccan prisoners were freed Saturday by the Polisario Front and were repatriated under its auspices. The Moroccans were flown home on an aircraft provided by the Libyan authorities.
  • SRI LANKA / CRISIS VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- The political crisis in Sri Lanka continues as the country awaits the prime minister's response to criticism by the president - a response a government spokesman says might not come for several days. The crisis began when the president announced a short-lived state of emergency, charging the prime minister with endangering national security by being too soft on the Tamil Tiger rebel group. Norwegian envoys plan to visit Sri Lanka next week despite the crisis, to continue plans for peace talks between the rebels and the government.

  • Mauritania / Elections VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- President Maaouiya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya has won Mauritania's presidential election and secured another six years in office.
  • BURMA/SUU KYI VOA 08 Nov 2003 -- The United Nations human rights envoy to Burma says Burma's military government has released pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, following months of international pressure, but that she is refusing freedom until 35 leaders of her National League for Democracy party are also released. The envoy, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, made the remarks at the end of a week-long visit to Rangoon.
