Government Statements and Transcripts

  • Transcript: Bush Speaks at Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration 07 Dec. 2001-- Bush: Our war against terror is not a war against one terrorist leader or one terrorist group. Terrorism is a movement, an ideology that respects no boundary of nationality or decency. The terrorists despise creative societies and individual choice -- and thus they bear a special hatred for America. They desire to concentrate power in the hands of a few, and to force every life into grim and joyless conformity.
  • Transcript: U.S. Plans to Open Mission in Kabul by December 22 07 Dec. 2001-- "We are working to put our mission in a state at which people can stay overnight, rather than just drop in for the day. And when we do, we will staff a diplomatic facility in Kabul, and I expect that to be open and operating before the 22nd," said Dobbins, who is the U.S. Special Representative to the Afghan Opposition.
  • Text: Nine Congress Members Call for Stepped up Action Against Iraq 07 Dec. 2001-- "If we have learned one thing from the ongoing battle in Afghanistan, it is that working effectively in coordination with locals on the ground can significantly leverage our own use of military farce. While we have no doubt that in the long run, the United States will always prevail in battle with the likes of the Taliban (not to speak of Saddam Hussein), we also know that we can minimize casualties and shorten conflict by cooperating with opposition forces. That has been a key element of U.S. strategy for several decades."
  • Transcript: Dod News briefing 07 Dec. 2001 -- The situation in Kandahar (...) reminds me of the situation in Mazar-e-Sharif some weeks back as well as the situation in Kunduz and Taliqan and in Herat. I think what we have seen report is in fact true. We have seen the surrender of a great many Taliban forces inside Kandahar. We are not yet sure, we do not yet have a sense of comfort that there is stability in the city and I don't expect that we will have a sense of comfort for perhaps two or three days, until we get a valid assessment of exactly what is going on in Kandahar.
  • Defense Department Report, December 7: Afghanistan Operations 07 Dec. 2001-- General Franks says Kandahar situation remains unstable
  • Excerpt: U.S. Delegation Goes to Saudi Arabia for Anti-Terrorism Talks 07 Dec. 2001-- Reeker: We have had a very constructive dialogue with Saudi Arabia on a wide range of issues, including this terrorist financing effort. And, as you are well aware, we are very satisfied with the level of Saudi cooperation.
  • Text: Toepfer Cites Need to Assess Afghan Environment 07 Dec. 2001-- Toepher: "People cannot secure real and sustainable economic development against a background of contaminated water, polluted land and marginalized natural resources,"
  • Text: NATO Takes Comprehensive Approach Against Terrorism 07 Dec. 2001-- "Accordingly, we have decided to support, individually and collectively, the ongoing U.S.-led military operations against the terrorists who perpetrated the 11 September outrages and those who provide them sanctuary,"
