Defense Policy / Programs

Government Statements and Transcripts

  • Secretary Rumsfeld Interview with CBS Face the Nation 11 Nov. 2001-- Rumsfeld: Interestingly, we've not detected any friction or problems within al Qaeda. al Qaeda is very much under the control of Osama bin Laden and his top 10, 15 people. Between al Qaeda and Taliban, yes. It appears that there is at least some reason to believe that there is a difference of a view, competition between Omar and his immediate lieutenants and Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants. Differences as to who should be in command of what, differences as to where forces should reinforce or not reinforce, differences as to where supplies should go.
  • Secretary Rumsfeld Interview with Fox News Sunday 11 Nov. 2001-- Rumsfeld: We do not -- the United States does not have the forces on the ground to march to Kandahar. The tribal elements in the south do have that capability. And the continued pressure with U.S. air power and with special forces on the ground, and a variety of other things that the United States is doing on the ground in various locations of that country, will help to put the Taliban and the al Qaeda on the run.
  • Text: Joint Statement of Bush and Pakistani President 11 Nov. 2001-- President Musharraf condemned the terrorist attacks of September 11 and welcomed the commitments expressed by President Bush to continue active engagement in Pakistan and the entire South Asian sub-continent.
