- Text: Remarks by U.S. Ambassador to Portugal McGowan on East Timor USIA 14 October 1999 -- The United States and its NATO ally Portugal are working together toprovide material assistance to suffering East Timorese and to end thehumanitarian crisis in Timor, says the U.S. Ambassador to PortugalGerald McGowan.
- AUSTRALIA / GUSMAO Voice of America 14 October 1999 -- The East Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmao met Australian Prime Minister John Howard Thursday for the first time. Mr. Howard and other Australian politicians welcomed Mr. Gusmao and fellow East Timor independence leader Jose Ramos Horta to Canberra. Mr. Gusmao thanked Mr. Howard for Australia's deployment of troops to East Timor to restore security to the territory.
- EAST TIMOR / RIGHTS Voice of America 14 October 1999 -- In the territory of East Timor, evidence is starting to emerge of murders during September's wave of violence by pro-Indonesian militias. Information remains sketchy, as international peacekeepers are only able to fan out slowly across the territory. United Nations officials are concerned they still lack the resources to properly investigate human rights abuses.
