During 2003 Marine Metals of Brownsville, Texas, was awarded a contract by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) for one ship, $414,768, and it had also dismantled another ship, for which it was awarded a contract in 2002. Also in 2003 Marine Metals was awarded a contract to dispose of two high priority vessels from the James River Reserve Fleet for approximately $600,000. Three ships will leave the James River Reserve Fleet thanks to domestic ship dismantling contracts announced June 24, 2004 by U.S. Maritime Administrator Captain William G. Schubert. Marine Metals of Brownsville, TX, has been awarded three contracts valued at $3.1 million to dismantle the American Banker, the Mormacmoon and the Santa Cruz. All three ships are considered high priority vessels for dismantling and recycling.
