1st Battalion, 6th Marines
The 1st Battalion 6th Marines was activated 11 July 1917 at Quantico, Virginia, as deployed 1st Battalion, 6th Regiment. It deployed during September-October 1917 to France and assigned to the 4th Brigade, 2D Division (Army), American Expeditionary Force. The battalion participated on the following World War I offensive campaigns: Aisne; Aisne-Marne; St. Methyl; and Meuse-Argonne. It also participated on the following World War I defensive campaigns: Toulon-Troyon; Chateau-Thierry; Marabache; and Limey. The unit participated in the occupation of Rhineland, December 1918 - July 1919. It relocated during July - August 1919 to Quantico, Virginia, and deactivated 20 August 1919.
The battalion reactivated 12 June 1922 at Quantico, Virginia, and participated in maneuvers at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, June - July 1922 and assigned to the Marine Corps Expeditionary Force. It deployed during January 1925 to Quantanamo Bay, Cuba, and returned during September 1925 to Quantico, Virginia where it deactivated 1 October 1925.
The battalion reactivated 29 March 1927 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It deployed during March - June 1927 to Tientsin, China and assigned to the 3D Brigade. It relocated during January - June 1929 to San Diego, California, and deactivated 31 March 1929
The battalion reactivated 1 September 1934 at Norfolk, Virginia. It relocated during September - October 1934 to San Diego, California. The battalion deployed during August - September 1937 to Shanghai, China, and assigned to the 2D Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force. It returned during February - April 1938 to San Diego, California. The 2D Marine Brigade was redesignated 1 February 1941 as the 2D Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. The battalion deployed during Marty - July 1941 to Reykjavik, Iceland, and reassigned to the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. It relocated during March 1942 to San Diego, California, and reassigned to the 2D Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, it deployed during October - November 1942 to Wellington, New Zealand. The battalion participated in the following World War II campaigns: Guadalcanal; Southern Solomon's; Tarawa; Sampan; Titian; and Okinawa. The battalion redeployed during September 1945 to Nagasaki, Japan, and participated in the occupation of Japan, September 1945 - June 1946. The battalion relocated during July 1946 to Camp Pendleton, California, and was reassigned during September 1946 to the 3D Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force. Reassigned during July 1947 to the 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, the battalion deactivated 1 October 1947.
The battalion reactivated 17 October 1949 to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and assigned to the 2D Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It deployed at various times as Battalion Landing Team 1/6 in the Mediterranean and Caribbean from January 1950 to the present, and was deactivated 4 August 1950.
The battalion reactivated 9 August 1950 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and assigned to the 2D Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis, October - November 1962, the intervention in the Dominican Republic, April - June 1965, and participated in numerous training exercises during the 1970's and 1980's. Placed under the operational control of the 3D Marine Division at various periods for deployment to the Western Pacific, elements deployed to Panama during January - July 1989. The battalion participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Southwest Asia, September 1990 - March 1991.
