1st Battalion, 5th Marines

1st Battalion, 5th Marines was activated 25 May 1917 at Quantico, Virginia as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. It deployed during June 1917 to France, and participated in the following World War I Offensive Campaigns, including Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Muse-Argonne. It participated in the following World War I Defensive Campaigns: Toulon-Troyon; Chateau-Thierry; Marabache; and Limey. The unit participated from December 1918 to July 1919 in the Occupation of the German Rhineland. The Battalion relocated during August 1919 to Quantico, Virginia, and deactivated 13 August 1919.

The Battalion was reactivated 17 May 1921 at Quantico, Virginia as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, 4th Brigade, and redesignated 15 March 1925 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. It deployed during February 1926 to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and relocated during September 1926 to Quantico, Virginia. It was redesignated 22 February 1927 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, and deployed during March 1927 to Nicaragua before being deactivated 2 January 1933.

1st Battalion reactivated 1 September 1934 at Quantico, Virginia as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Fleet Marine Force, and was redesignated 1 September 1935 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force. The Battalion deployed during September 1940 to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and was redesignated 1 February 1941 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It relocated during April 1941 to Quantico, Virginia, and was deactivated 6 January 1942.

Reactivated 19 January 1942 at New river, North Carolina, the Battalion deployed during June 1942 to Wellington, New Zealand, and participated in the following World War II Campaigns: Guadalcanal; New Guinea; New Britain; Peleliu; and Okinawa. The unit deployed During October 1945 to Tangku, China, and redeployed during May 1947 to Guam. It was redesignated 1 June 1947 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, and deactivated 1 October 1947.

The Battalion reactivated 1 October 1949 at Camp Pendleton, California, as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It was redesignated 7 July 1950 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Provisional Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force. It deployed during August 1950 to Korea , and was redesignated 13 September 1950 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. the unit participated in the Korean War Operating from Pusan Perimeter, Inchon-Seoul, Chosin Reservoir, East Central Front, and Western Front. It participated in the defense of the Korean Demilitarized Zone from July 1953 to February 1955. The Battalion relocated during March 1955 to Camp Pendleton, California.

Redeployed during August 1959 to Camp Schwab, Okinawa, and assigned to the 3rd Marine Division, Fleet Marine force, the unit relocated during September 1960 to Camp Pendleton, California, and reassigned to the 1st marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It was redesignated 15 June 1965 as Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 1st Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, and relocated to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The Battaion deployed during March 1966 to the Republic of Vietnam as part of the Special Landing Force, and was redesignated 8 May 1966 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It Participated in the War in Vietnam, March 1966 - April 1971, operating from; Rung Sat; Chu Sai; Que Son; Hieu Nhon; Phu Loc; Phu Bai; An Hoa; and DA Nang. It relocated during April - May 1971 to Camp Pendleton, California, and was deactivated 15 June 1974

The Battalion reactivated 31 March 1975 at Camp Pendleton, California, and participated during July-December 1975 in Operation New Arrival, the relocation of refugees from Indochina. It participated in numerous training exercises throughout The 1970s and 1980s. The unit participated in the Battalion rotation between the 3rd Marine Division on Okinawa and 1st Marine Division stationed in the United States during the 1980s, and participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Southwest Asia, August 1990 - March 1991.
