96th Airlift Squadron [96th AS]

The 96th Airlift Squadron was originally constituted as the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron on 25 May 1943. It was activated on 1 July 1943 at Baer Field, IN, and assigned to the 440th Troop Carrier Group. The unit saw combat in ETO during World War II before it inactivated on 18 October 1945.

The unit was reactivated in the Reserve on 6 March 1947 and assigned to Second Air Force.

Reassigned to the 440th Troop Carrier Group, on 3 September 1947, it was redesignated as the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium on 27 June 1949. It was ordered to active service on 1 May 1951 before inactivating on 4 May 1951.

The unit was redesignated 96th Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 26 May 1952 and activated in the Reserve on 15 June 1952 as part of the 440th Fighter-Bomber Group (later, 440th Troop Carrier Group, Medium).

The 96th relocated to the Minneapolis-St Paul Intl Airport (later, Minneapolis-St Paul IAP-Air Reserve Station, MN) on 8 January 1953.

It was redesignated as the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium on 8 September 1957. Reassigned to the 440 Troop Carrier Wing, Medium, on 14 April 1959, it was ordered to active service on 28 October 1962. It was relieved from active duty on 28 November 1962.

The unit was subsequently reassigned to the 934 Troop Carrier Group, Medium (later, 934th Tactical Airlift Group), on 11 February 1963.

The unit transitioned from the C-119 to the C-130 in 1970.

It was redesignated the 96th Tactical Airlift Squadron on 1 July 1976.

Redesignated as the 96th Airlift Squadron on 1 February 1992 it was reassigned to the 934th Operations Group, on 1 August 1992.
