Tactical Support Center, Keflavik

The Operations Department/Tactical Support Center (TSC) of Commander Fleet Air Keflavik exercises operational and tactical control of assigned U.S. and NATO air forces. Missions include but are not limited to undersea and surface warfare, air surveillance, intelligence operations, search and rescue, and participation in U.S./NATO exercises. The department consists of the OPCON and Analysis divisions which work in conjunction to ensure aircrews receive complete and thorough briefs before each mission. The Executive Officer of CFK also acts as the Operations Officer and coordinates operational policy and planning matters with other departments and commands. Reporting to the Executive Officer is the TSC Director who advises on matters such as operations, personnel and readiness requirements, training, hardware and software configurations, and performs the duties of Operations Officer in his absence. Working directly under the TSC Director are the OPCON, Analysis, and Mission Control and Evaluation officers with their respective divisions.

US Naval Facility Keflavik, Iceland, the oldest operating site in the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS), closed after 30 years of service on Dec. 30, 1996. The facility had earned a solid reputation for professionalism in conducting its operational mission "... to detect, track and report acoustic data in the Norwegian Sea." As a frontline deterrent, NAVFAC Keflavik played an integral role in forward deployed tactical anti-submarine warfare operations, giving real-time locating data to the Tactical Support Center coordinating the ships and aircraft prosecuting a submarine contact.

The US Navy has 16 Tactical Support Centers world-wide which support maritime patrol aviation forces deployed overseas and at homeports within the United States. The TSC is a node of the Navy Command and Control System (NCCS) Ashore Network. A TSC is equipped to provide Naval maritime sector commanders ashore with command, control, communications, and intelligence support for directing and supporting forces under their command. TSC's have state of the art equipment to assist in mission planning, tactical aircrew briefing, flight following, and post flight mission data analysis for aircrews flying a variety of maritime patrol aircraft. US Navy TSCs are equipped to support the following types of aircraft: P-3C Orions, S-3B Vikings, Canadian CP-140 Auroras, and the British NIMROD.
