Submarine Squadron FOUR
Submarine Squadron FOUR maintains headquarters in building 3 at Naval Submarine Base New London. Commander, Submarine Squadron FOUR's mission is to carry out the assigned tasks designated by Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and to provide operational and engineering support to assigned ships. Prior to reorganization in the 1990s, Submarine Squadron FOUR included ten SSN 637 class nuclear attack submarines, one submarine rescue vessel, and a torpedo recovery vessel. A Squadron Four submarine was selected as the best all around ship in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet for 1999 (Battenberg Cup). This was the first time in the 96 year history of the Battenberg Cup competition that a submarine has won this prestigious award for excellence.
