New York City (SSN-696) was laid down by Electric Boat Div., General Dynamics Corp., Groton, CT 15 December 1973; launched 18 June 1977; sponsored by Mrs. James R. Schlesinger; and commissioned 3 March 1979 with Cdr James A. Ross in command.

She was decommissioned and stricken 30 April 1997, berthed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and is scheduled to be disposed of at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
