The contract to build SSN 690 was awarded on 01/08/1971 and her keel was laid on 08/12/1972. She was launched on 10/19/1974 and she was commissioned on 06/25/1977.
Philadelphia departed SUBASE June 18, 2003 in support of the global war on terrorism.
USS Philadelphia became the first Los Angeles-class submarine to complete 1,000 dives, Dec. 4, 2003 at 5:39 p.m. Philadelphia achieved the milestone during a seven-month deployment. Although Philadelphia is the first Los Angeles-class submarine to accomplish this feat, it is the fourth nuclear-powered submarine to do so. The dive took place on the equator in sunny 85-degree weather.
Philadelphia returned to Naval Submarine Base New London Jan. 18, 2004.
