MCM 2 Defender

The ship shield's Dark blue and gold are the colors traditionally used by the U.S. Navy. The Dark blue represents the sea and the area of operations. Scattered throughout the top of the shield are caltrops. These ancient devices were used to impede military passage or advance. Therefore, it is symbolic of the minefields of today. The chevron, which represents strength, protrudes into the minefield symbolizing the mission of a minesweeper to "Clear the way." The torch highlights the search for subversive weaponry and the USS Defender's role as the vanguard, going before the fleet to secure the area of operations.

The ship crest's hound emphisizes the search and protect roles of the USS Defender in clearing the seaways for the safe passage of U.S. Navy ships. The gold collar represents dedication to mission. Red symbolizes courage, spirit and action.
