Kearsarge MED 04 Surge Deployment
LHD-3 Kearsarge
"Proud, Trustworthy, Bold"
After four months, hundreds of maintenance and modernization items and countless training hours later, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) returned to Naval Station Norfolk following the completion of sea trials April 26-28, 2004.
The sea trials were the capstone event of Kearsarge's planned maintenance availability that began Jan. 12 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
During its three days at sea, Kearsarge conducted a Level I flex test for both boilers, full power demonstration, ballast/deballast tests and anchor tests, as well as tests and calibrations on its radar and electronics systems.
The Norfolk-based multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) deployed June 7 to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility (AOR) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terrorism. The ship transported assets of the Air Combat Element of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The deployment was not unlike the recent deployment made earlier by Kearsarge's Norfolk-based sister ship, USS Bataan (LHD 5).
USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) stopped off the coast of Camp Lejune, N.C., June 8-10 to onload Marines, vehicles and equipment to support Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terrorism. Kearsarge, which surge deployed June 7, onloaded elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU) for transport to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) began offloading elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in the Persian Gulf July 7, reaching the mid-point of its surge mission to the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility (AOR). The process took three days.
USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) passed another milestone in the homeward leg of its current mission July 20, when it transited the Suez Canal. Kearsarge left its homeport in Norfolk, Va., June 7 on a surge mission to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility (AOR) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terrorism. The ship transported assets of the Air Combat Element of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit to a base in the Northern Arabian Gulf, in response to a Central Command request for additional personnel and equipment.
The crew of the Norfolk-based multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) took a well-deserved break from the ship's surge mission when they visited Souda Bay, Crete, Greece, July 22-26. Kearsarge was on the return leg of a surge mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terrorism.
Just three days out to sea, after departing Souda Bay, Crete, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) pulled into the historic island of Malta July 29.
KEARSARGE returned to Norfolk in August 2004.
