LHA-5 Peleliu
ex-Da Nang / ex-Khe Sanh
Pax Per Potens: "Peace Through Power"
The USS Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group deployed to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Gulf 13 August 2001 to 04 March 2002. The Peleliu, a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, left San Diego Aug. 13 with a crew of 950 sailors and 1,500 Marines. It was accompanied by two other San Diego ships, the dock-landing ship Comstock with a crew of 350 sailors and 400 Marines, and the Dubuque, a transport dock ship with 420 sailors and 300 Marines.
Following the events of September 11th, USS PELELIU's Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) cut short a port visit to Australia and sailed toward the Arabian Sea. Marines from USS Peleliu were the first launched the first Harrier raids over Afghanistan in early November of 2001. Peleliu ARG was a central support force for Operation Enduring Freedom. Peleliu was the first ship in the war on terrorism to deploy Marines to the beach, and then fly over 200 miles to the desert country of Afghanistan. Several prisoners of war were also kept onboard for a short time in late 2001.
