In March 1993 the Saipan departed on a six-month deployment, returning on Sept 10, 1993. The Saipan was accompanied by the USS Ponce and the Pensacola. During the deployment USS Saipan participated in four major combined amphibious exercises and played a role in two search and rescue (SAR) missions involving downed allied aircraft participating in Operation Deny Flight. USS Ponce operated bilaterally with Greek units in exercise "Alexandros '93," with the Tunisians in "PHIBLEX '93" (Amphibious Landing Exercises), and conducted a training offload near the coast of Israel. USS Pensacola demonstrated its readiness during exercises conducted in Spain, Greece, Israel and Tunisia.
