Tarawa ESG WESTPAC 00 Deployment
LHA-1 Tarawa
"Eagle of the Sea"
The Tarawa ARG departed San Diego for a 6-month WESTPAC on August 14, 2000.
The Tarawa Amphibious Ready Group made a port visit to Darwin, Australia, from Sept. 7-11, 2000. The crews of USS Tarawa (LHA 1), USS Duluth (LPD 6), USS Anchorage (LSD 36), USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and USNS John Ericsson (TAO 194) joined the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC) for the visit to Darwin, a commercial hub located in Australia's northern territory. Before their port visit, the ARG and 13th MEU(SOC) conducted amphibious missions culminating in an amphibious assault in the northern Australia territory.
The Amphibious Ready Group arrived in East Timor Sept. 14, 2000 in an effort to provide humanitarian assistance to local residents and reinforce U.S. presence in the region. Guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) arrived in East Timorese waters with USS Tarawa (LHA-1), USS Duluth (LPD-6) and USS Anchorage (LSD-36), carrying tons of building materials and food for the devastated half-island territory. The four ships, carrying a total of 4,000 Sailors and Marines, left East Timor days later.
In October 2000, the Tarawa ARG participated in Operation Determined Response, and steamed to the Gulf of Aden in Yemen to provide USS Cole and United States Government agencies on-site logistics, force protection, and evacuation support following the horrific terrorist attack on the Cole.
The Tarawa ARG returned to San Diego in February 2001.
