Another chapter was added to the F-14 Tomcat history book October 1 2004, when Fighter Wing Atlantic officially disestablished its headquarters at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.

Originally established in July 1971 as Fighter Wing 1, the command was responsible for overseeing the operations of the Navy's fighter aircraft at three air stations: Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, Calif., former NAS Miramar, Calif., and NAS Oceana. In 1996, the west coast Tomcat squadrons relocated to NAS Oceana, and the command was redesignated Fighter Wing Atlantic.

Commander Fighter Wing, Atlantic, based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, provided fighter assets to Atlantic and Pacific Fleet carrier air wings. The Commander, Fighter Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet provided logistics and administrative support to 12 fleet F-14 Tomcat Squadrons, one Composite Squadron, and one Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS). The Fleet Replacement Squadron for the F-14 is VF-101, was stationed at NAS Oceana. Thirteen squadrons of Tomcats were based out of Oceana with one more in Atsugi, Japan. In FY96, all active duty F-14 squadrons, except Fighter Squadron (VF)-154, were relocated to Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia. VF-154 will remain at NAS Atsugi, Japan, through FY03.

The F-14 Tomcat, is designed to protect the carrier battle group from hostile aircraft. The Tomcat is a twin engine, all weather aircraft capable of flying twice the speed of sound. It carries the air-to-air Phoenix, Sidewinder or Sparrow missiles and a 20mm Gatling gun. The Tomcat can carry a large array of air-ground ordnance including LGB's, MK80 series, and CBU's. It also carries the LANTIRN pod and conducts tactical reconnaissance with the Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS).

Fighter Wing Atlantic maintained operational and administrative control of six fleet F-14 squadrons and one replacement squadron. As a result of the disetablishment of Fighter Wing Atlantic, those squadrons were to fall under the command of Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic as the remaining F-14s continued to transition to the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet.
