DD 721 Woodrow R Thompson

Woodrow R. Thompson (DD-721)-a Gearing-class destroyer-was laid down on 1 August 1945 at Newark, N.J., by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. The contract for her construction was cancelled on 12 December 1945, but it was decided to reinstate the award of the contract early in 1946-but to suspend work on the ship. Accordingly, the ship was launched, as planned, on 16 March 1946, and sponsored by Mrs. Robert L. Thompson, the mother of Sergeant Thompson. Delivered in a partially completed state to the 3d Naval District, New York, N.Y., for maintenance and preservation, on 31 July 1946, Woodrow R. Thompson was struck from the Navy list on 2 November 1954. She was sold for scrap on 29 August 1955.
