Combat Logistics Force [COMLOGFOR / CLF]
In 1999, the thirteen Henry J. Kaiser class fleet oilers provided freight, mail and passenger delivery, in addition to their primary mission of providing more than 150 million gallons of cargo fuel (aviation and diesel) to US Navy and NATO forces worldwide. USNS Tippecanoe deployed to the Persian Gulf in fiscal year 1999. USNS John Ericsson operated out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as the mid-Pacific oiler, her first scheduled voyage since reactivation Dec. 1, 1998. USNS Walter S. Diehl supported the USS Kitty Hawk, USS Roosevelt and USS Constellation battle groups, in addition to other US and Allied ships, during Operation Southern Watch.
MSC's six combat stores ships provided logistical support to deployed carrier battle groups and amphibious ready groups, in addition to resupplying several US embassies. USNS Saturn and USNS Sirius supported customers from the USS Wasp and USS Saipan battle groups and NATO units in the Mediterranean. USNS Niagara Falls and USNS San Jose coordinated fuel and stores replenishments for carrier battle groups USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, USS John C. Stennis, USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Enterprise while in the Persian Gulf. In addition, Niagara Falls supported efforts that were key to the successful U.S. strikes against terrorist targets in Afghanistan and Sudan.
MSC operated four ammunition ships in fiscal year 1999, while three more ships continued modification to civil service mariner standards. USNS Mount Baker and USNS Kiska completed major modifications during fiscal year 1999 and began duty with the numbered fleets. The conversion of Navy Combat Logistics Force ammunition ships to MSC civil service mariner standards continued during 1999. The conversion contract for USNS Shasta was awarded to Norfolk Shipbuilding Corporation in Virginia. Shasta arrived at the yard in March. Modifications were scheduled to be complete in February 2000. USNS Butte and USNS Santa Barbara remained in reduced operating status [ROS-90] during fiscal year 1999, both drydocked at Baltimore Marine, Inc.
