97th Troop Command
The 97th Troop Command provides a command and control headquarters for the approximately 3100 soldiers of the Utah National Guard who comprise the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 115th Engineer Group, 211th Aviation Regiment and the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade (Linguist).
Soldiers of the 97th Troop Command have participated in a number of activities in 1999 to enhance soldier and unit readiness. Activities during the Training Year 1999 included road-building projects at Annette Island, Alaska, to restoration projects in Honduras following the devastation of Hurricane Mitch. Local construction projects included construction projects at Dugway Proving Ground, Richfield Armory, the new Orem Readiness Center, and Army Garrison Camp Williams. Soldier and unit sustainment operations were conducted in Thailand, Panama, Germany, and Norway as well as locations in the United States, such as San Diego, California; Camp Pendleton, California; Fort Harrison, Montana; Fort Lewis, Washington; and Fort Gordon, Georgia.
Soldier and unit skills were tested during training for response to emergency situations within the state. A number of armories afforded facilities to fire fighters and community activities. The Language Olympics at Monterrey, California provided an excellent opportunity for linguists to demonstrate their individual and team capabilities. Free fall parachute sustainment training and scuba diving sustainment allowed our Special Forces personnel to certify individuals and teams in these crucial military skills. The Presidential Selective Reserve Call-up was used to deploy three soldiers to Macedonia. Overseas Deployment for Training (ODT) and Joint/Combined Special Forces Exercises and Training (JCET) activities were conducted in Panama, Germany, Thailand, Republic of Korea, Japan, and the Maldives.
Soldiers and units of the 97th Troop Command have worked hard to be an active part of the local community, support the requirements of the state of Utah, and be an integral part of the United States Army and the defense of the nation.
