949th Forward Support Battalion
"Pride of Ordnance"

The 949th Forward Support Battalion was originally organized in the Texas National Guard as the 1st Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery, an element of the 36th Division on 1 June 1936. Its Headquarters was organized and federally recognized at Fort Worth on 27 July 1936.

The unit was inducted into Federal Service at Fort Worth on 25 November 1940.

The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 1 February 1942 as the 133rd Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 36th Infantry Division, and on 5 November 1942 as the 155th Field Artillery Battalion. It inactivated at Camp Patrick Henry, VA, on 18 December 1945.

It was expanded and redesignated on 2 July 1946 as the 155th Field Artillery Battalion (hereafter separate lineage) and the 749th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, an element of the 49th Armored Division.

On 7 February 1949, the 749th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion organized and was federally recognized with Headquarters at Fort Worth. It was redesignated as the 949th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion on 31 October 1952.

The unit was ordered on 15 October 1961 into active Federal Service at home stations, and was released on 9 August 1962 from active Federal Service reverting back to State control.

On 1 March 1963, it was reorganized and redesignated as the 949th Maintenance Battalion and remained assigned to the 49th Armored Division. It was relieved on 15 January 1968 from assignment to the 49th Armored Division.

On 1 November 1973, it was reassigned to the 49th Armored Division.

The unit was redesignated on 1 June 1985 as the 2nd Forward Support Battalion. It was reorganized on 1 October 1987 and redesignated as the 949th Support Battalion (Forward) with Headquarters at Fort Worth.
