876th Engineer Battalion

The federal mission of the 876th Engineer Battalion is to, on order, deploy through its mobilization station/training area to a gaining CINC to provide mobility, counter-mobility, survivability and general engineering support to the 28th ID(M); and to, on order, assist other agencies in emergency mitigation and recovery operations.

The state mission of the 876th Engineer Battalion is to, on order, from the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 876th Engineer Battalion, or selected individuals as needed, will deploy to assist in the re-establishment of the protection of life, property and the preservation of peace, order and public safety. On order, the unit is to assist other agencies in emergency mitigation and recovery operations.

The 87th Engineer Battalion participates in the "Partnership in Peace" program; a program where the Pennsylvania Army National Guard is partnered with the Republic of Lithuania. Members of the 876th have participated in weeklong seminars on a variety of military topics. The 876th has hosted Lithuanian soldiers during its annual training cycles.

The Washington, PA based unit of the 876th engineers participated in a nation building exercise in Guatemala as part of Fuertes Caminos 94. The mission was to build three bridges, assist in finishing two schools and help build relationships between the people of Guatemala and the United States. The unit, Delta Company, was the only engineer unit selected from the state of Pennsylvania to participate in this exercise. Their higher headquarters was the 240th Engineer from the State of Maine.

From June 2002 until February 2003, the 876th was mobilized and deployed to Central Europe as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. They were assigned as a Task Force Headquarters and commanded 13 different units from western Pennsylvania. Their mission was to perform force protection, installation security and implement anti-terrorism measures for the United States and Allied military facilities, personnel, and their families. The 876th Engineer Battalion was deployed to Iraq to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom on January 19, 2005.
