Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team

The 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion (BSTB) was created as part of the transformation of the 1st Brigade Combat Team to the US Army's modular force structure. As part of this reorganization assets previously held at Division level Engineer, Military Intelligence, and Signal Battalions were made organic to the Division's brigades with the creation of Special Troops Battalions, which incorporated engineers, military intelligence, and signals elements.

The 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion traces its lineage to when it was first constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army as Headquarters Troop, 82nd Division and organized on 25 August 1917 at Camp Gordon, Georgia. This unit was demobilized on 27 May 1919 at Camp Mills, New York.

It was reconstituted on 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as Headquarters Company, 82nd Division and organized in January 1922 at Columbia, South Carolina. It was Reorganized and redesignated 13 February 1942 as Headquarters and Military Police Company (less Military Police Platoon), 82nd Division. It was ordered into active military service on 25 March 1942 and reorganized at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. It was reorganized and redesignated on 15 August 1942 as Headquarters Company, 82nd Airborne Division.

The unit was withdrawn on 15 November 1948 from the Organized Reserve Corps and allotted to the Regular Army and subsquently reorganized and redesignated on 1 September 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Command and Control Battalion, 82d Airborne Division.

It was again reorganized and redesignated on 25 May 1964 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division.

The Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division was reorganized and redesignated on 16 June 2006 as Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82d Airborne Division (the Headquarters, 1st Brigade, 82d Airborne Division subsequently had a separate lineage).

In 2007, elements of the 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion deployed in support of the reorganized 1st Brigade Combat Team to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where they continued to serve into 2008.
