71st Ordnance Group (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)
The mission of the 71st Ordnance Group (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) is to, on Order, deploy and conduct operations in support of the Combatant Commanders or other government agencies to counter Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High Yield Explosives (CBRNE) and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) threats.
The 71st Ordnance Group (EOD) was activated in 2006 as part of the expanding CBRNE mission, which had led to the creation of the 20th Support Command (CBRNE) in 2004. Previously all Active Component EOD units in the Continental United States (CONUS), the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico had been under the control of the 52nd Ordnance Group (EOD). The 71st Ordnance Group took control of the 3rd and 79th Ordnance Battalions (EOD) from the 52nd Ordnance Group, and the 84th and 242nd Ordnance Battalions (EOD) were subsequently activated. The Group's battalions were dispersed around the United States, often being under the administrative control while in garrison of other units.
