704th Forward Support Battalion
As of January 14th, 2006, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, which included the 704th Forward Support Battalion, took control of Forward Operating Base Prosperity, located in Baghdad, from 4th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. Their mission included training Iraqi Security Forces and maintaining security within the central and southern regions of the Iraqi capital.
The 704th Support Battalion was constituted on 30 july 1943 in the Army of the United States as the 704th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company and assigned in the 4th Infantry Division. It was activated 1 august 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
704th Support Battalion was later reorganized and redesignated 1 December, 1945 as the 704th Ordnance Maintenance Company. It was then inactivated 2 March, 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. Allotted to the regular Army on 25 June, 1948 the 704th Maintenance Company was activated 6 July, 1948 at Fort Ord, California. It was later reorganized and redesignated 1 April, 1953 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 704th Ordnance Battalion; concurrently, organic companies constituted in the regular Army and activated in Germany.
704th Ordnance Battalion was reorganized and redesignated 1 October, 1963 as the 704th Maintenance Battalion and later relieved from the 4th Infantry Division and inactivated 15 April, 1985 at Fort Carson, Colorado.
The unit was redesignated 704th Support Battalion (main), assigned to the 4th Infantry Division and activated 1 May, 1987 at Fort Carson. The 704th Support Battalion (main) was transferred to Fort Hood, Texas in December, 1995. The 704th was reorganized and redesignated 15 January, 1997 as the 704th Division Support Battalion. The 704th Division Support Battalion was reorganized and redesignated 16 December, 2004 as the 704th Support Battalion assigned to the 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.
