690th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance)

The mission of the 690th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance) is to provide ground evacuation support and services to the XVIII Airborne Corps by clearing the battlefield of wounded soldiers, moving medical equipment, supplies, blood and medical personnel.
Although located on Fort Benning, the 690th Ground Ambulance is a subordinate unit of the 56th Medical Evacuation Battalion, the 44th Medical Brigade, and the XIII Airborne Corps based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. As an integral part of the XVIII Airborne Corps, the 690th is routinely called upon to deploy in support of our fighting forces during contingency missions.
In preparation for conducting its wartime mission, the 690th provides year-round direct support ground evacuation support to the United States Army Infantry Center, 3-3 Infantry Division, 3/75 Ranger Regiment, the Ranger Training Brigade and the School of the Americas. Moreover, we are constantly conducting readiness training in support of contingency missions/plans (JRTC, NTC, CSAR, Disaster Relief).
As of late 2001, the 690th Medical Company (GA) consisted of approximately 78 soldiers and 24 M997 Ambulances.
The 690th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance) was constituted in the Regular Army as 690th Medical Collecting Company on 22 July 1944 and activated on 15 August 1944 at Fort Jackson, SC.
On 6 December 1944, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as the 690th Ambulance Company, Motor, and after serving in Europe and the Phillippine Islands during WWII, was inactivated in the Philippines on 19 April 1946.
The 690th was redesignated as the 690th Medicinal Company (Ambulance) on 11 October 1954 and activated on 3 December of that year at Fort Benning, GA.
The unit has earned two Meritorious Unit Citations, a Superior Army Unit, and a Joint Unit Citation.
As of later 2001, the unit had deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Joint Guard in Bosnia, West Point Summer Camp, SFOR-8 in Bosnia, and KFOR-3B in Kosovo.
