644th Personnel Services Battalion

The 644th Personnel Services Battalion is located in Springfield, Illinois. It is one of the few administrative units in the National Guard that is located in Illinois. It is composed of two subordinate units called personnel service detachments. The 623rd PSD is located in Springfield, Illinois next door to the headquarters unit. The 633rd PSD is located in Crestwood, Illinois. All three units abides by the same mission which is to manage combat essential personnel information and provide direct military personnel support to strength managers and commanders.

The 3rd Personnel Command (PERSCOM) hosted Silver Scimitar, one of the world's largest personnel training exercises, at Fort McCoy. The exercise began July 28, 2001, and 1,100 National Guard and Reserve troops from around the country participated. The 644th Personnel Services Battalion from Illinois was one of the many units participating in the immense exercise.

The Army's Officer Professional Development (OPD) system is a comprehensive, integrated and sequential development process that consists of education, training, job experience and self-development activities. A Unit's Officer Professional Development (OPD)Program consists of a series of courses designed to broaden and deepen officers' knowledge and understanding of the military profession beyond the specific technical expertise of military occupation training. The OPD Program serves as the basis for subsequent professional development. HHC, 644th Personnel Services Battalion has established an OPD training session for all of the battalion's officers.
