640th Regiment (Regional Training Institute)
The 640th Regiment (RTI), located at Camp Williams, Utah, is a Regional Academy established by the National Guard Bureau in April 1984.
The 640th Regimental Regional Training Institute (RTI) consists of the 1/640th Non-Commissioned Officer Education System (NCOES) Battalion and the 2/640th General Studies (GS) Battalion. The regiment maintained its mission of providing formal military training to officer candidates, non-commissioned officers, enlisted soldiers and trainees for the 12 western states that comprise Region G. The unit's service area includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam for NCOES Courses (PLDC, BNCOC, and ANCOC).
The 1/640th NCOES Bn conducts three First Sergeant Courses, 11 Advanced and 13 Basic NCO Courses, and 12 Primary Leadership Development Courses. In all, the battalion trained over 1,500 NCOs. In addition, the battalion also provided instructor support to the 2/640th GS Battalion's many training missions.
The 2/640th GS Battalion conducted formal training in cannon crewman, fire direction, and fire support military occupational specialty qualification (MOSQ) and Phase 2 and 3 NCOES areas. This training provided increased readiness levels for numerous units throughout Utah and the United States. The battalion also provided instructor and staff support for the 2-week consolidated Phase I OCS course conducted at Fort Meade. In addition to OCS and Field Artillery training, the battalion also conducted Basic Training Orientation Classes (BTOC) throughout the year. This course enabled our newly enlisted soldiers to attend Initial Entry Training better-prepared. Students of Officer Candidate School (OCS), Class 43, completed their Phase III training at Fort Lewis, WA, and graduated in August at the Draper Facility. Class 44 participated in Phase I training at Fort Meade, SD. All of the candidates performed at their best throughout the training periods.
The Regiment continued to represent the Utah National Guard in the community. Its color guard performed numerous missions throughout the state. Regiment personnel also participated in numerous climbing-wall events in support of the anti-drug awareness program.
