634th Brigade Support Battalion
634th Forward Support Battalion
In 2006, the 634th Forward Support Battalion was redesignated as the 634th Brigade Support Battalion as part of a state-wide transformation.
The mission of the 634th Forward Support Battalion is to provide combat service support to all units, Divisional and non-divisional, operating within the Brigade Support Area (BSA). The 634th Forward Support Battalion (FSB) is tasked with providing logistical support to 66th Bde.
Company B (Maintenance) is tasked with:
- Providing direct support (DS) maintenance to include repair of artillery, missiles, small arms, tank turrets, track and wheeled vehicles, communications material, power generation equipment, and chemical equipment;
- Providing limited back-up recovery and evacuation assistance to supported units;
- Technical maintenance assistance to units. Technical supervision of Class IX supply for supported units;
- Maintaining Assigned Stockage List (ASL) of repair parts. Repairable exchange service for selected parts;
- Coordinating issue of Class VII Operational Readiness Float (ORF);
- Establishing maintenance collection points; and
- On site repair via infantry support teams.
Company C (Medical) is tasked with:
- Providing direct support (DS) medical to include ground evacuation, treatment, and holding to 66th Brigade elements;
- Establishing Ambulance Exchange Points with BN Aid Stations;
- Providing technical assistance and guidance with outside medical assets;
- Providing training and certification for Combat Life Savers;
- Coordinating issues of Class VIII resupply to subordinate medical elements; and
- Performing retention physical exams on soldiers of supported units.
As of mid-2001, the unit was comprised primarily of Eastern Illinois University students with an experienced non-commissioned officer cadre.
The 634th FSB deployed to Iceland to take part in the 2001 Northern Viking exercise. This was the unit's first overseas deployment since being organized in 1993. While in Iceland, the unit supplied the 66th Infantry Brigade daily with fuel, rations and ammunition. The unit worked closely with the 106th Aviation out of Peoria, IL, to ensure that provisions reached Soldiers in the field.
