556th Personnel Support Battalion

The 556th is to provide direct personnel service support to the 25th ID(L) in garrison. On order to deploy with the division to the theater of operations the unit is to maintain the personnel data base, perform casualty reporting, conduct replacement operations and provide essential personnel services to commanders, soldiers and Army civilians.

The lineage and honors of the 556th Personnel Services Battalion "Lightning Service" dates back in history through the 556th Personnel Services Company.

The 556th Personnel Services Company was originally constituted on 25 August 1944 in North Africa as the 556th Replacement Company.

The unit disbanded in Italy on 8 August 1945, but reconstituted on 27 September 1951, again, as the 556th Replacement Company.

The unit activated in Japan in November 1951 and inactivated in Japan on 15 June 1953.

The unit activated and redesignated on 10 January 1968 as the 556th Personnel Services Company at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

The unit inactivated on 1 October 1968 and activated again on 16 July 1986 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

The unit participated in the Rome-Arno Campaign, World War II-Europe and received a Meritorious Unit Commendation Streamer for its service in Korea.

The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 16 September 1995 as the 556th Personnel Services Battalion "Lightning Service" at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as part of the 25th Infantry Division (Light).
