524th Military Intelligence Battalion

The mission of the 524th Military Intelligence Battalion is to conduct Counterintelligence and Human Intelligence Operations IOT support US Forces Korea/Combined Forces Command in Korea and National Collection Requirements.

The 524th Military Intelligence Battalion was first constituted as the 524th Technical Intelligence Coordination Detachment on 25 September 1950 and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas on 10 October 1950. The unit arrived in Inchon, Korea on 2 December 1950 and was deactivated on 1 December 1951. For its service during the Korean War the unit received 5 campaign participation credits.

The 524th Technical Intelligence Coordination Detachment was redesignated as the 524th Intelligence Corps Detachment and reactivated on 22 June 1965. Assigned to Third United States Army, the unit was activated at Fort Bragg on 1 July 1965 and deployed to Vietnam, arriving there on 19 September 1965. The unit performed a counterintelligence mission in Vietnam and was stationed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Saigon. On 15 October 1966, the unit was redesignated as the 524th Military Intelligence Detachment and on 26 November 1970 was deactivated. For its service in Vietnam, the unit received the Meritorious Unit Commendation and 13 campaign participation credits.

On 16 June 1982, the unit was redesignated as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 524th Military Intelligence Battalion, activated at Camp Coiner, Yongsan, Republic of Korea and assigned to the US Army Intelligence and Security Command. Company A was concurrently activated in Korea, while the other organic elements were constituted 16 October 1988. The battalion was headquartered on Seobinggo Compound, Yongsan Garrison.

The 524th Military Intelligence Battalion command, interrogation and analytical teams deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2005 to February 2006. During this deployment, Task Force Mongoose Soldiers conducted counterintelligence and interrogation missions while assigned to the Multi-National Force - Iraq (MNF-I) Joint Interrogation and Debriefing Center (JIDC) at Forward Operating Base Abu Ghraib, Camp Bucca, and Camp Cropper. For their contributions over the course of the deployment, members of the Task Force were presented a Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
