Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team
The mission of the Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team is to, on order, deploy and provide communications, Intelligence, and mobility and security support to enable the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division to accomplish assigned objectives.
The Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team was activated and organized on 16 December 2004 at Fort Hood, Texas. The Battalion was reorganized in accordance to the Army's drive towards modular transformation. As a part of this transformation, assets previously held at division level, but habitually attached to a division's brigades during operations were made organic to those brigades. The Special Troops Battalion included engineer, military intelligence, military police, and signal elements.
As of 14 January 2006, 4th Brigade Combat team, 4th Infantry Division, which included its Special Troops Battalion, took control of Forward Operating Base Prosperity, located in Baghdad, from 4th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. Their mission included training Iraqi Security Forces and maintaining security within the central and southern regions of the Iraqi capital.
In 2008, the US Army conducted a major realignment involving the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. The Brigade Combat Team was reflagged as the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division was reflagged as the Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado was reflagged as the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. As part of this reflagging, the 4th Brigade Combat Team transitioned from a Heavy Brigade Combat Team to an Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division was reactivated at Fort Carson, Colorado with the rest of the Brigade.
