417th Base Support Battalion
In 2005, an official ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany marked the reflagging of the Installation Management Agency - Europe's Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams into 21 US Army Garrisons to align with the common US Army installation management structure worldwide, known as Standard Garrison Organization. The 417th Base Support Batalion was inactivated and folded into the 98th Area Support Group, which was reflagged as the US Army Garrison Franconia.
The 417th Base Support Battalion provided command and control of assigned and attached units and facilities to ensure the sustainment of the community in its area of operation, supported Operations Other Than War, received and prepared augmentation forces for onward movement, processed and provided individual replacements, transitioned the community during deployments and crises, and continued community support operations.
The 417th Base Support Battalion was Europe's largest such battalion and consisted of 4 Area Support Teams in Wuerzburg, Kitzingen, Giebelstadt and Wertheim.
