414th Base Support Battalion

In 2005, an official ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany marked the reflagging of the Installation Management Agency - Europe's Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams into 21 US Army Garrisons to align with the common US Army installation management structure worldwide, known as Standard Garrison Organization. The 414th Base Support Batalion was inactivated and folded into the 104th Area Support Group, which was reflagged as the US Army Garrison Hessen.

The US community at Hanau was extensive. Although most American military kasernes were located in Hanau, others were in small towns like Erlensee, Gelnhausen, and Budingen. Home to the 414th Base Support Battalion, Hanau was also home to the 104th Area Support Group Command.

Hanau was separated into 9 kasernes with 7 housing areas on post as well as leased areas on the economy. Wolfgang Kaserne was the primary shopping center offering a PX, commissary, bowling alley, roller skating rink, bottle shop, bookstore, post office, bank, German post office and many more shops, services and restaurants. Wolfgang was a one-stop shopping place.

Hanau had 2 elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. Three child development centers care for the smallest community members. The Army Community Service was in Hanau to help transition to life in Europe.

Located 30 minutes from Frankfurt International Airport, catching a flight was easy and never far from a city rich in culture and arts. Hanau had a history of gold and silver making and many industries were still involved in the manufacture of precious metals. Heavily bombed by Allied forces in 1944, Hanau rebuilt its historic Geldhaus which subsequently housed a Geldmuseum, 2 major churches that had been restored to their ancient appearance, and Scholss Phillipsruhe, a beautiful place for a weekend stroll.
