411th Base Support Battalion

In 2005, an official ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany marked the reflagging of the Installation Management Agency - Europe's Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams into 21 US Army Garrisons to align with the common US Army installation management structure worldwide, known as Standard Garrison Organization. The 411th Base Support Batalion was inactivated and folded into the 26th Area Support Group, which was reflagged as the US Army Garrison Heidelberg.

The Heidelberg community was recognized as one of the best military communities in the United States Army Europe (USAREUR). The 411th Base Support Battalion was proud of that recognition and worked hard each day to improve customer service and quality of life programs. The 411th Base Support Battalion was an Army combat service support organization for the community of American military and NATO forces. The services of the 411th Base Support Battalion insured quality of life for the military members, civilians and their dependents. Heidelberg was also home for Headquarters, US Army Europe/Seventh US Army, Headquarters, Land Forces, Central Europe; and several other major commands, including the 26th Area Support Group, the 411th Base Support Battalion's higher headquarters.

Heidelberg, one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, was nestled in the heart of the Neckar Valley about 70 miles south of Frankfurt. It was home to vineyards, medieval castles and fortifications. The city, a longtime haven for tourists, featured the famous Heidelberg Castle, built during the 16th century. It combined Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Another historical landmark was the University of Heidelberg, the oldest university in Germany, dating from 1386. Boat trips along the Neckar River highlighted many points of interest in and around Heidelberg and were fun for the whole family.

Serenades, concerts and open-air theater presentations in the Heidelberg Castle courtyard were special treats during the summer months. The castle was also illuminated several times a year, commemorating the battles of the 17th century. Floodlights flanked the castle and fireworks exploded in the sky above.

A stroll through Heidelberg's old city was a step back in time. Narrow streets lined with houses from various periods, expertly restored to their original condition, provided glimpses into German history, and culture. Relatively mild German weather was found in the Heidelberg area, and snowfall was very limited.
