4th Battalion (Attack Reconnaissance) 4th Aviation Regiment
"Raiders"

The 4th Battalion (Attack Reconnaissance), 4th Aviation Regiment, "Raiders" was first constituted on 17 March 1980 in the Regular Army as Company C, 4th Aviation Battalion, an element of the 4th Infantry Division. The unit was activated on 16 March, 1982 at Fort Carson, Colorado. The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 16 August, 1987, as Company D, 4th Aviation Battalion, 4th Infantry Division.

On 16 November 1993, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment. The Battalion was inactivated on 15 February 1996 at Fort Carson, Colorado.

On 8 January, 2004, the Chief of Staff, United States Army, approved the Army Task Force Focus Group's recommendations for a second attack/reconnaissance battalion to be assigned to the heavy divisions. On 9 February, 2005, 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment successful completed the AH-64D Apache Longbow fielding and training program. It was inactivated and reflagged as the 4th Battalion, 4th Aviation and activated on 16 May 2005 at Fort Hood, Texas assigned to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. This was part of the transformation of the 4th Brigade (Aviation), 4th Infantry Division into a modular combat aviation brigade. The unit was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 4th Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment

As of December 2005, the 4th Battalion 4th Aviation Regiment, part of the Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, was operating out of Camp Taji, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit was tasked with performing a myriad of missions to include escort, air assault, MEDEVAC, and reconnaissance operations.

In July 2009, the remainder of the 4th Infantry Division, less the Combat Aviation Brigade, moved to join other elements of the Division at Fort Carson Colorado. Instead of joining them, the Combat Aviation, 4th Infantry Division, including 4-4th Aviation, prepared to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the International Security Assistance Force. The Brigade and its units were expected to complete a move to Fort Carson, Colorado upon its return from Afghanistan.
